How To Sell Your Mac Online
Perhaps you're considering selling your old Mac to make room for a new one. Or maybe you don't use it anymore? Whatever the reason, every Mac's life eventually comes to a close and it's time to move on. Knowing where to begin when it comes to selling your Mac can be challenging, and with the holidays approaching, now might be the ideal moment to put your Mac up for sale. Hopefully, our advice will be able to address any queries you may have about selling your Mac on the internet.
Backup
If you're selling your Mac and planning to buy a new one, you should back up your data so you can transfer it to your new Mac. Even if you don't intend to buy a new Mac, it's a good idea to back up your data just to be safe. If you're thinking about backing up your data and migrating to a new Mac, the guidelines below are a must-read.
Sign Out
If you wish to sell your Mac privately, such as on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, you'll want to make sure your Apple ID is signed out of everything. If you don't sign out of Apple Music or iTunes, iMessage, and iCloud before selling your Mac, whoever buys it will have access to all of these services at your expense. Fortunately, signing out of everything is a simple procedure that shouldn't take you long.
To sign out of Apple Music or iTunes, open the app, go to the menu bar, and select Account > Authorisations > Deauthorize from the drop-down menu. You'll be asked for your Apple ID and password on this computer, and then you'll be prompted to Deauthorize.
It's a similar process to sign out of iMessage. Go to the navigation bar in the iMessage app and select Messages > Preferences > iMessage, followed by Sign Out.
Finally, you must log out of iCloud. If you're going to use iCloud to back up your Mac, you should generally wait until the backup is finished before signing out. You'll be asked if you want to maintain a copy of your iCloud data on your Mac when you sign out. You have the option of deleting it now, but it will be gone regardless once the factory reset is completed; the decision is completely yours. In any case, go to System Preferences and select your Apple ID to sign out of iCloud. Click Overview on the sidebar, then Sign Out.
Reset Your Mac
Returning your Mac to factory settings is the final step before putting it up for sale. You'll need to perform a factory reset and reinstall the most recent version of macOS. To do so, follow the instructions below:
- Restart your Mac and hold down the Command + R keys while it restarts to enter recovery mode.
- Select Disk Utility from the recovery mode menu.
- Select your primary hard disk, which is typically referred to as Macintosh HD, and then hit Erase.
- When Disk Utility is finished, dismiss it and choose Reinstall macOS.
Your Mac has been successfully reset after the new macOS has been loaded, and you can now decide how you want to sell it.
eBay or Gumtree
Selling your old Mac on second-hand commerce sites like eBay or Gumtree has a lot of advantages, but it also has a lot of disadvantages. When it comes to buying used gear online, eBay and Gumtree are usually the first places people look. A fast search for a MacBook Pro on eBay yields hundreds of results, not only giving you an idea of how to price your Mac but also reassuring you that demand is considerable (as well as competition). While it takes a little more effort than selling on Facebook or trading it in, a private sale is more likely to get you a greater price for your Mac, which is the clear advantage of using eBay to secure a private sale.
Gumtree is a terrific method to sell your Mac locally to folks who are willing to go to your house to view it and possibly pay for it in cash right then and there. While this will save you a lot of time because you won't have to worry about shipping, you should expect to haggle!
Facebook Marketplace is a platform that allows you to sell
Facebook Marketplace is a brand-new feature that Facebook has been extensively promoting in recent years. It's similar to Gumtree in that it's a terrific way to reach out to people in your region who are looking for a used Mac. Create a listing on Facebook is quite simple: fill in the details, upload some images, and you're ready to go. The best part of Facebook Marketplace is that there are no fees, which means you get to keep 100% of the revenues.
However, selling your things on Facebook Marketplace isn't always the smoothest or most reliable option. Expect a slew of people to try to haggle you down or ask you things you've probably already answered a thousand times. As a result, you must include as much information as possible in the listing to avoid any misunderstandings or arguments when it's time to hand over your Mac. If the buyer is local, they will likely come to your house to pick up the gadget, similar to Gumtree, although, considering the current coronavirus outbreak, in-person transactions may not be the safest option right now.
Mac Resellers
There are several third-party Mac resellers out there who will gladly accept your old Mac and offer you a fair amount for it. You won't earn as much money for your old Mac as you would if you sold it privately, but the worry, hassle, and risk are just not there.
We make selling your old Mac as simple as possible at Mackinder. We'll get back to you with a price as soon as possible after you've given some information. If you're satisfied with the quotation and want to proceed, we'll mail you a box and set up a pickup time. The monies will be deposited directly into your account if the Mac agrees with the quote you submitted.
Selling your Mac to us is also a terrific option to save money on one of our refurbished Macs, however, you will have to pay for it in full at first. You can then transfer your data from your old Mac to your new one once it arrives. After the trade-in quote has been accepted, ship us your old Mac in the provided box, and we'll send you the money.

Apple Recycling Programme
If you've explored all other possibilities and still can't find what you're looking for, you can always sell your Mac back to Apple. The Apple Trade-In program allows you to trade in almost any old or new Apple product in exchange for credit against a future Apple purchase or an Apple Store Gift Card. However, if you're looking to save money, this is probably not the greatest alternative, as Apple doesn't offer the best rates, even if your Mac is nearly new and in fantastic aesthetic shape. If Apple determines that your Mac is worthless, they will assist you in recycling it for free.
