How to Use Apple Music’s Personal DJ Feature to Create Your Own Personal Radio Station

How to Use Apple Music’s Personal DJ Feature to Create Your Own Personal Radio Station

A feature called Personal DJ is new in Apple Music as part of iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. This is a customized Apple Music Radio station based on your musical preferences.

The only way to activate it appears to be to ask Siri to “Play some music” or a similar phrase on an iOS device or a Mac. This will launch your personal radio station, whose "artwork" will look like the one to the left, complete with your photo or avatar if you've added one to your profile. (Learn how to create an Apple Music profile and share your listening history in this article.)

After you've played it once, it'll appear in For You's Recently Played section, as well as in iTunes' Radio section or the iOS Music app's Radio section. As a result, you'll be able to start it from there.

This station's playlist appears to include the following:
  • You have music from the iTunes Store that you have purchased (if any).
  • You have music in your iCloud Music Library that you have added.
  • You've enjoyed music from Apple Music.
  • You've listened to music from Apple Music.
When I've listened to it, it's included some music that I had downloaded from Apple Music and added to my iCloud Music Library, but had since deleted it because I didn't like it. As a result, music that has been played, even if only once, appears to be one of the criteria.

Update: As Apple Music has learned my listening habits over time, I've discovered that this is one of the best ways to listen to Apple Music when I'm not looking for a specific artist or album. The selection is intriguing, as it includes music that I am familiar with as well as music that is similar to my tastes. My only gripe is that I listen to music from a variety of genres, and my radio station occasionally plays only classical music, others only rock, and still others only jazz. I'd like to have several personal radio stations that play music based on my listening history but are genre-filtered.
